Build your own hero

Introduction

Whether a character appears heroic or not depends on how they are portrayed. The construction kit "Build your own hero" offers you the opportunity to explore heroic representations in a playful way. When characters are portrayed heroically, we speak of " heroization " – you will read this term often in our texts (-;

Combine different poses, attributes and backgrounds and consider whether the overall image looks more or less heroic. You can always call up an explanatory text for each element you select. There are no postures that are always associated with heroism and none that are never associated with it. The same applies to attributes and backgrounds. The decisive factor is always the context in the overall picture and how the audience interprets it.

Think of a story that fits your picture – you can find a few ideas here! You can also try to create the least heroic scene possible! At the end you can download your picture and discuss it with others with or without a story.

End

Whether a character appears heroic or not depends on many factors. There are no postures that are always associated with heroism and none that are never associated with it. The same applies to attributes and backgrounds. The decisive factor is always the context in the overall picture and how the audience interprets it.

Take a sword, for example: in many cultures, a sword is seen as a symbol of power and heroic combat. A person who owns a sword or is good at fighting with it is often characterised as brave, courageous and strong. This is also how we would interpret them if they were depicted in a duel with a strong opponent. However, you could also imagine that someone sitting on a donkey with a sword that is no longer suitable for fighting. Take Napoleon in the caricature shown, he doesn't look heroic at all, but rather ridiculous.

Caricature. Napoleon Bonaparte sitting on a donkey.

Nevertheless, there are certain patterns of depiction that occur more frequently than others. In this regard, they can also appear more or less heroic. We see swords more often in duels, possibly also on horseback, and less often broken on a donkey. Accordingly, it is easier for us to interpret swords as attributes of a heroic figure. You can read more about how different elements of your picture create an effect below.
